Something special happened in our workspace. With no rigid plan or formal session, a spontaneous team-building exercise unfolded — and it left a lasting mark.

Afrikaans celebrated its 100th official year, and with one of our inspired clients being the ATKV — champions of Afrikaans arts, culture, and language — we took the opportunity to connect deeper. Each team member was given a cake, official Afrikaans 100 brand colours, and two traditional Afrikaans treats. The task? Decorate a cake that reflects what Afrikaans, and our client ATKV, means to them.

What followed was a beautiful blend of creativity, emotion, and storytelling. Some saw the language and our client as an “open door” to opportunity, others described it as a magnetic space of “symbiotic play.” Empowerment, joy, inclusivity, humor, and heritage came to life — not just in icing and sprinkles, but in heartfelt presentations and open conversations.

This impromptu exercise highlighted something powerful: when people are given the space to create and share authentically, they connect — not only with each other, but with the clients they serve. We became more aware of the emotions we evoke in our work, and how that emotional awareness can fuel more inspired, impactful results.

What made it work? It wasn’t forced. It flowed between tasks, with music in the background and curiosity in the air. And by ending the day with sharing our cakes — and our client stories — with those close to us, we invited others into the purpose behind our work.

Sometimes, the best team-building doesn’t come from planning — it comes from meaning, spontaneity, and the courage to share.
