Are you building a business or are you building a legacy?
Can there be a difference between the two?
I have been questioning myself on this topic the past week after reflecting on a few projects our company executed.
Plant a tree.
Write a book.
Have a child.
These three basic life principles have one common goal, leaving a legacy.
Can you add to these three, or replace one of them with āBuild a businessā?
If this is the case, you need to analyse carefully your business strategy. Are you running a business to come by, make profit, to eventually build a lifestyle, or do you have an strong contingency plan built in your strategy that is focused on the brand becoming a legacy.
In our company, when we talk about inspiration and growing our clients into a forest of success, it aims in building a legacy. When you really want to make a difference, you need to leave a legacy.
The impact of Covid 19, shifting consumer trends and a cut throat, fast pacing targeted and forced marketing tactic have the business environment in havoc.
Business leaders start doubting the way they are positioned, their adaptation to change, they question their innovation and measure themselves constantly to what other businesses in the same sector are doing to survive, grow or even worse, why they have shut down.
BREATHE!
Just STOP!
Stand back⦠LOOK⦠LISTEN⦠and BREATHE!
Your legacy has begun the day you have started your business. That day, the aim was not to build an empire, it was realizing a dream. A dream where your ideas will be transformed into a product or service, purchased by a client or consumer.
Do you remember the first sale? The expression on your client leaving your store or reading that letter, message or e-mail on their experience?
That, right there was the fuel for growing and building a legacy.
The key to growth, contingency and realizing a business evolving in a legacy lies in the experience of those you want to leave a legacy to.
If you want to adapt, change your brand identity, innovate, change you market strategy, whatever⦠stand back and revisit the experience. Just be silent, look and listen.
The answer on how you must adapt will become clear. Building a legacy is not a quick fix solution. A tree and a child take years to grow strong, need to be pruned and raised before it can grow fruit and become a contribution to society. A child and a tree need to be protected to become independent and a tree to give shade to those you will not live long enough to meet or see. So⦠if you want to build a legacy, make sure you relook or revise the following three steps within your business strategy:
- Be honest about your vision statement and apply the basic principles throughout all business functions.
- Measure client experience and adapt product and service so that the experience sell the dream and build the legacy.
- Innovate product and marketing in line with the dream built for your legacy. Donāt fluff or try being smart to fit the current trend, derailing from your vision to fulfill a dream that build a legacy.
Be legendary!
Forever inspired.
